This backpack is someone's every worldly possession. It was inside of a tent that is someone's only safety and shelter. And strangers came in and infiltrated that safety. Opened backpacks. Rifled through belongings. I lost SO MANY backpacks, clothes, phones, shoes during homelessness. Sometimes they were stolen by others just trying to get by and sometimes they were tossed out in sweeps. It was always a devastating loss. Why are we so angry at homeless people? Why do we want to punish them more? I think withstanding wind, rain, lightening in a tarp is quite enough punishment. And anyone who thinks they could live like that and never seek to escape with substances is incredibly naive. Instead of ridicule and persecution we need positive regard and empathy. What if we just changed things and started treating people like the worthy humans they are? For Christians: the worthy children of God you say they are? You'd be surprised at the difference you would see. But you also wouldn't have anyone to scapegoat for all of the problems or look better than by comparison either. Every life is worth saving, even the ones you claim to be nuisances.
