Emely Charloth Suaza Chambo, a student at Churchill High School in San Antonio, was riding to Sunday mass on July 12 with a friend, another minor, when agents stopped the car. It started as a traffic stop over a faulty light on the vehicle. Minutes after leaving the house, Emely sent her mother a photo to tell her she had been taken. A witness recorded it. She spent two days in a local processing center… Then ICE told the family that because she is a minor, a parent had to come in person, and that if no one did, she could be sent out of state. Her father, Fernando Suaza Ortiz, went to the Crosspoint processing center in San Antonio. They would not hand his daughter over. They detained him instead, charged him over his entry into the country, and set a $5,000 bond. He worked at the Hilton Garden Inn. The family came from Colombia in 2023 and filed for asylum. They have made every appointment and hearing since. They have work permits and driver's licenses. "Neither has committed a crime. Their asylum case is pending. Now they're both sitting at the Dilley Trailer Prison," Castro wrote, saying ICE used a teenage girl to get to her father.
