Something I’ve learned spending so much time with people coming home from jail is that we assume everybody knows how to do basic adult stuff. They don’t. And I don’t mean that ugly. I mean some of our guys have never had a bank account. Never signed a lease. Never had a job with benefits. Never had anybody teach them how to budget money or build credit or even what questions you’re supposed to ask at a doctor’s appointment. Then they get out and we’re like alright buddy, good luck. Get a job. Find somewhere to live. Stay sober. Pay your fines. Make your probation appointments. Fix your relationships. Stay away from everybody you used to hang out with. Oh, and make good decisions. Cool. With what money? What car? What credit? What rental history? What support system? And God forbid they mess up because there will be 47 people standing around ready to say, “See, I knew he’d go right back.” Sometimes reentry support is literally just having somebody you can call and say, “Hey, I’ve never done this before. What am I supposed to do?” #reentrysupport #felons #wedorecover
