HEALING LODGES:THE PART OF CANADIAN JAILS NO ONE TALKS ABOUT🔐 There’s something in Canada 🇨🇦 that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world 🌍 And almost nobody talks about it 🤫 It’s called a Section 81 Healing Lodge 🪶 Here’s how it works 👇 In most countries, if you’re Indigenous and you go to prison ⛓️ you go to a regular prison 🏢 Maybe they have a program. Maybe an Elder visits 👨🏽‍🦳 But the prison is still run by the government 👮 Canada did something different in 1992 📜 We put it into federal law ⚖️ It’s called Section 81 ✍️ Section 81 says the government can legally transfer custody of an Indigenous person to an Indigenous community 🤝 That means the community is now responsible for that person ❤️ Not the government. The community 🏡 And they don’t run it like a normal prison 🚫 Right now there are 10 of these Healing Lodges across Canada 🍁 They’re owned and run by First Nations communities 🪶 The Correctional Service funds them, but the Elders are in charge 👨🏽‍🦳👩🏽‍🦳 So what’s it actually like inside? 👀 No barbed wire 🚫⛓️ No big concrete blocks 🧱 The buildings are round ⭕ Made of wood 🪵 You’re living on the land 🌲🏞️ Instead of just doing time ⏰ your day is ceremony 🔥 Sweat lodges 🪨💨 Pipe ceremonies 🪶 Learning from Elders 👨🏽‍🦳 Wood carving 🪵 Being on the land 🌿 The whole point is healing ❤️‍🩹 Because Canada had to admit something 😔 Indigenous people are in federal prison way too much 📊 And locking people up the same way wasn’t fixing it ❌ So communities said: "Let us try something different." 🗣️ And the government actually said yes ✅ And put it in law 📜 Now, other countries have looked at this 👀 The US 🇺🇸 Australia 🇦🇺 New Zealand 🇳🇿 They liked the idea 💡 But they couldn’t do it ❌ Legal problems ⚖️ Who has jurisdiction. Private prisons 💰 It was too complicated 😵‍💫 Canada is still the ONLY country that made it law 🇨🇦✨ So when people say "all prisons are the same"... that’s not true here ❌ We have regular federal prisons 🏢⛓️ And we have Section 81 Healing Lodges 🪶🌲 Two different ways to do corrections in one country 🇨🇦 And that’s important 💯 Because if one community can take custody and choose healing over just punishment...
