Former police officer compares himself to Jesus after beating shoplifting suspect. Former Northwoods Police Officer Samuel Davis, 28, just got sentenced to 10 years in federal prison after a jury convicted him of violating the civil rights of a handcuffed shoplifting suspect. On July 4, 2023, prosecutors said Davis grabbed Charles Garmon at a Walgreens, cuffed him, turned off his body camera, and instead of taking him to jail drove him several jurisdictions away to an empty field in Kinloch, Missouri. There, according to the evidence and Garmon’s own testimony, Davis allegedly pepper-sprayed him, beat him with a baton hard enough that Garmon heard his own jaw break, tased him, and threatened to kill him if he ever came back to Northwoods. A passerby spotted the patrol car, interrupted the attack, and found Garmon bloodied and calling for help. Davis still claims he was just giving a “courtesy ride.” At sentencing last Thursday he looked the judge in the face and compared himself to Jesus, saying “Jesus was prosecuted and accused of things he did not do.” Judge Stephen Clark basically told him the jury already spoke. The judge also ripped the entire Northwoods Police Department, calling what happened a tragedy, a failure, and a public embarrassment that the department’s culture helped create. Davis was sentenced to 10 years federal prison.
