BREAKING🚨 DHS says detainees at California's largest ICE facility get "the best healthcare many aliens have received in their entire lives." The court-appointed monitor who just toured it found the exact OPPOSITE. The place is the California City Detention Facility, a shuttered state prison out in the Mojave Desert reopened last August under a two-year, $130 million ICE contract and run for profit by CoreCivic. More than 1,000 people are locked inside. Most of them have NO criminal record whatsoever, as first reported by KQED's Tyche Hendricks and Elize Manoukian. A federal judge, Maxine Chesney, only ordered the monitor in after seven detainees sued, alleging they were denied medications, went hungry, and were housed in a "decrepit" facility. One man said he was denied cancer treatment. Another said he couldn't get regular insulin for his diabetes. One woman missed a week of HIV medication after being transferred. Detainees launched a hunger strike a month after the place opened. Chesney had already issued an emergency order telling ICE to get two sick men to outside doctors. It didn't hold. ICE's own attorney later admitted in court that staff failed to take one of the men to receive his prostate cancer biopsy results because they hadn't properly entered the appointment. Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin called the judge's order "unnecessary and superfluous" — and that's where the claim about detainees receiving "the best healthcare than many aliens have received in their entire lives" came from. The monitor's own review of the records tells a different story. The facility has operated since August without a single Office of Detention Oversight inspection. When California's own investigators toured it, they found not enough doctors for the population, and women were detained before the facility even stocked basic women's health supplies.
