The Liberal government has quietly pushed through major changes to Canada’s pesticide laws in Bill C-30, giving cabinet the power to authorize pesticides even when Health Canada has determined they’re unsafe. This should alarm every Canadian. These changes were buried in an omnibus bill and rushed through Parliament without proper study by health or environment committees, without expert testimony from scientists and public health leaders, and without the transparency Canadians deserve. As I told the CBC: "The Liberal government chose to shut down debate and fast-track the passing of their omnibus bill," the NDP said in a statement." Food security matters and farmers need support but food security can’t be used as an excuse to let politicians override science or weaken protections for people, pollinators, soil, water and the environment. At the same time, the government is cutting public agricultural research capacity, closing research facilities, eliminating scientists and technicians, and ending programs like organic and regenerative agriculture research. If the Liberals are serious about food sovereignty, they should be investing in public science, working with farmers and strengthening protections, not giving cabinet the power to sideline Health Canada’s safety decisions. New Democrats will keep fighting for a food system that supports farmers, protects public health and puts science ahead of corporate lobbying
