WINNIPEG’S FORGOTTEN HISTORY: THE DJ WHO DISAPPEARED INSIDE AN OSBORNE VILLAGE NIGHTCLUB. This is one of the most unsettling and unusual stories in Winnipeg’s recent history. On October 12, 2002, 21year old Eduardo Sanchez known locally as DJ Phonosys, disappeared after a night out in Osborne Village. Eduardo was a local DJ, and his disappearance left his family, friends and police searching for answers. Days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months. Eventually, more than a year passed without anyone knowing what had happened to him. Then, on December 5, 2003, the Winnipeg Free Press published a headline that would bring the mystery to an end: “MISSING DJ’S BODY FOUND IN NIGHTCLUB.” Eduardo had been found inside the building that formerly housed Die Maschine Cabaret. According to the reports, investigators discovered him concealed inside a narrow cavity between two walls. The nightclub had continued operating while Eduardo’s disappearance remained unresolved. Police reportedly found no evidence that he had been forced into the space, and the exact circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear. Today, that same building at 108 Osborne Street is home to Anytime Fitness and Club Cabana. Think about that for a moment. A building many Winnipeggers walk into today has a history that most people probably know nothing about. Behind the businesses, renovations and changing storefronts are stories that have become part of Winnipeg’s history. Eduardo Sanchez deserves to be remembered as more than a headline. He was a 21year old young man whose life ended in circumstances that remain haunting.

🚨As most of America shifted to the left on Tuesday, some Republican strongholds doubled-down on hate and cruelty. Marshall Rawson, a 34-year-old Republican who attended the deadly 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, according to a Talking Points Memo investigation, won a Florida House seat Tuesday. The “Unite the Right” rally was organized by white supremacist groups and attendees were filmed shouting slogans like “blood and soil” and “Jews will not replace us.” One of the attendee, neo-N*zi James Alex Fields Jr. drove his car into anti-fascist protesters, killing Heather Heyer. The incident has been characterized as a terrorist attack. Rawson has acknowledged past involvement with the League of the South, a racist, antisemitic neo-Confederate group that advocates Southern secession. Founder Michael Hill shared a 2018 video burning a Talmud and sieg-heiling, saying “We stand for the white race against all our enemies, particularly the Jews.” After the Tree of Life synagogue massacre, Hill wrote: “It never gets old! What a great ad for us!” Hill and Rawson both spoke at the League’s 2021 “Florida Freedom Conference.” Rawson says his involvement ran 2013 to 2016 and “consisted exclusively” of demonstrating against “unfettered immigration” and gay marriage, and in defense of “historic monuments.” TPM found video of League members greeting him by name in Charlottesville, video of him carrying a League flag, and a photo of him near James Alex Fields Jr. shortly before Fields drove into counter-protesters, killing Heather Heyer. He has never renounced the group. TPM also detailed posts calling for the execution of LGBTQ+ people and condoning slavery. An X account called RockOfDixie, which appeared to belong to Rawson, once posted: “Multiculturalism kills and public lynchings worked.” TPM contacted 28 current and former Florida GOP officials (including many of Rawson’s endorsers plus top leaders such as Gov. Ron DeSantis, Rick Scott, Ashley Moody, Byron Donalds, and legislative leaders). None of them denounced him or told voters to reject him. The party had previously congratulated Rawson after his primary win
