My name is Maryam Tahmasebi, and I am a professor of psychology and statistics at Los Angeles Pierce College—or, I was, until April 9, when my life, and my family’s lives, changed forever. On that day, I was teaching a class when my son texted me, saying that my husband hadn’t picked him up from school and wasn’t answering his phone, which is very unlike him. I picked my son up from school, came frantically back home, and called the police, thinking that something horrible must have happened to him. Even so, it never occurred to me that he could have been detained by ICE. We are legal permanent residents with valid green cards. My husband, Eissa Hashemi, is also a professor, and has dedicated his life to mentoring PhD students in the Business Psychology department of The Chicago School. The government had decided to punish my husband for being the son of a woman who was a translator for the Iranian hostage takers in 1979, before Eissa was even born. My son and I have spent over 120 days in the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, away from my husband, who was taken to the South Texas Detention Center in Pearsall, Texas. We have been put through hell for the past four months, and our physical and mental health have deteriorated in ways that might not be reversible for years. We are only allowed to speak with my husband for 10 minutes every two weeks, under supervision. We are in tremendous pain and have been trapped in an unendurable, unending nightmare. I want my son to have a normal life, not spend his days in this awful detention center in Dilley. No child deserves this. No human deserves this. We are asking anyone with a conscience to help us end this nightmare. There are more things I want to say, but this is the shackled version of what I feel safe saying right now. I will end on this: If this could happen to us, a law-abiding family of two professors and a young boy, it can happen to anyone.

BREAKING🚨🏳️‍🌈 A Wisconsin Principal of the Year says school board members FABRICATED "grooming" accusations against him, then handed the fake documents to activists to destroy his career. Jeffrey Peterson ran Raymond School in Franksville, a pre-K through eighth grade school of about 400 kids in Racine County. It is his own alma mater and the first school he ever taught in. He took over as principal in 2021, after roughly three decades in Wisconsin education and a mayoral proclamation for his work. The only reason his employer knew he is gay, his amended federal complaint says, is that he asked about insurance benefits for the partner he has been with for decades. In April 2023, interim superintendent Michael Garvey gave him a scathing performance evaluation. The two men had worked together 34 days. It was the first poor review in Peterson's 29 years in Wisconsin schools, the complaint states, and it came after Garvey allegedly made remarks to him about a gay teacher who "didn't fit in." The suit says an unelected anti-gay operative, Arthur Binhack, was given access to the school's staff, its policies and its employee records, and then put out flyers accusing Peterson of "sexualizing and grooming" children. Board members Kari Morgan, Gwen Keller, Audrey Kostuch and Amanda Falaschi are accused of assembling a document falsely stating Peterson was under investigation for inappropriate conduct with kids. It went up on a local Moms for Liberty chapter's Facebook page in October 2023. The chapter's then vice chair, Joann Koenecke, allegedly handed the manipulated records to the press. That August, about 30 neighbors had shown up at the monthly board meeting to praise his leadership. Weeks later he was on leave, and the board voted 4-1 against renewing his contract. The lone vote for him came from Amy Helvick, who said publicly he wasn't being fairly represented. "The Defendants and their proxies fabricated a pretext to fire Peterson based on his sexual orientation," the complaint reads. He applied to more than a dozen Wisconsin districts and went a full year without work in the field. BREAKING🚨 A 78-year-old Colorado priest has been in ICE detention for almost a year. He is now malnourished, in a wheelchair, has a persistent cough, and with chest pain. The only treatment he gets is cough medicine. Edward Nalwamba came to the U.S. from Uganda in 2002 and worked about 15 years as a priest at a church in Greenwood Village before retiring. ICE agents arrested him in Lakewood in September. He has no criminal history, and his attorney says he complied with ICE check-ins for roughly 14 years before that. Joy Athanasiou, one of his immigration lawyers, says Nalwamba is now extremely malnourished and wheelchair-bound. He fell in early August and has nearly fallen several other times. His symptoms include coughing, chest pain, a scratchy voice, headaches, dizziness and fatigue. He has had a chest X-ray and had a doctor listen to his lungs with a stethoscope. Katherine Soo, a physician assistant who reviewed his full medical file, found he tested positive on a TB skin test right after ICE took him into custody, and says he still has not gotten the sputum culture testing that would rule out active tuberculosis. The Aurora facility, run by private prison company GEO Group, had a laboratory-confirmed active TB case this year. A man detained inside said at least 12 people have tested positive. Colorado health officials have been trying to get inside and investigate since a county public health order on June 25. GEO has not complied. The state issued its own order Thursday, giving GEO until Monday to turn over the names of everyone who tested positive or was exposed. More than 400 people work in that building. In messages to a friend, Nalwamba wrote, "I really don't know what's happening to my body. These people have tinkered with my health so much." In another, he wrote, "Brother, I cough until I feel my chest will burst." His records also show indicators for possible prostate cancer, including elevated PSA levels. He has not seen a specialist.
