Her hormone treatment was withheld for weeks, along with medication for a chronic illness. She asked for a bra and got one 15 days later. Three other trans women were held with the men there too. "We'd go out to the yard together, the three of us, and we'd cry and laugh together," she said. "They're my sisters." Staff pushed her to sign voluntary departure papers more than 10 times, she says. "I always refused. I would rip up the paper, fight, scream." Eloy is run by the for-profit prison company CoreCivic. Detainees there describe medical neglect, BROKEN air conditioning through Arizona summers and prolonged solitary confinement. ICE calls her account of mistreatment and denied medical care "entirely false" and says she missed check-ins, which she denies. The agency's emailed response referred to her by her deadname and male pronouns while stating that staff treat "all detainees equally, with respect and dignity." BREAKING🚨 ICE took GENETIC SAMPLES of roughly 920,000 people last year. 133,000 of them were from children as YOUNG AS 4 — logging every single one of those genetic profiles into the FBI's CRIMINAL DATABASE. The numbers also include hundreds of samples from elderly people, the oldest known is 96. The samples go into CODIS, the FBI's national criminal DNA system that police departments across the country search when hunting for suspects. As of December, more than 3.3 million entries in that database were indexed as "detainee" profiles. Most people in ICE custody have no criminal conviction. Being in the country without papers is a civil violation, not a crime. "There's no probable cause to commit a crime," said Ric Simmons, a law professor at Ohio State who studies search and seizure. "There's no court case that authorizes this kind of search for any kind of civil violation like this." On the children, he said he had never heard of anything like it. Missy Owen, president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, called what the government has built "the birth of a genetic panopticon," and said the most intimate data a person has is being dumped into a permanent database "on the off chance that you might commit a crime years from now." Even if a court eventually rules the swabs illegal, Simmons said, the samples can still be used against people in deportation proceedings. Detainees cannot sue the officers who took them. The swabbing has reached people who were never in immigration custody at all. The federal judge overseeing journalist Katie Phang's lawsuit for the release of Epstein files had a stunning warning for Trump's Justice Department today: He has held government lawyers in contempt before, and he's prepared to do it again to enforce his orders. “That isn't a threat,” Senior U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan said. “That's a promise.” Sullivan delivered the extraordinary warning during a blistering hearing over whether the Justice Department is complying with his previous order requiring the government to release Epstein-related records or justify withholding them. He noted that he has previously held Justice Department attorneys in civil contempt and said he has “no desire to go down that road again.” But he put the DOJ “on notice,” adding “I think it's important to know how far a federal judge has gone to enforce judicial orders." Phang already won an order requiring the government to release records or justify withholding them. Now Sullivan is demanding evidence for some of the DOJ's excuses, a timetable for compliance and answers about why his existing order hasn't been enough. And if the Justice Department still doesn't get the message, Sullivan left very little ambiguity about what could come next.

People who support the laws say they help address public safety, sanitation, and encampment concerns, while critics say they effectively criminalize homelessness by punishing people for having nowhere to sleep. In 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court voted 6-3, stating that cities can enforce bans on sleeping in public spaces without violating the Constitution's prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment. Heidi Beirich, 59, was taken into custody at her home in Palm Springs, California on Wednesday and appeared in federal court in Riverside. She ran the Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project from 2012 to 2019, the operation that monitored the Klan, neo-Nazi outfits and the Proud Boys, and she submitted testimony to the House January 6 committee about Proud Boys extremism. She now faces wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to submit false statements to a federally insured bank, and conspiracy to commit concealment money laundering, in a case filed 2,000 miles away in Montgomery, Alabama. The program at the center of it ended years ago. The SPLC paid confidential informants to embed inside white supremacist groups and passed what they found to local and federal law enforcement. It says the accounts were kept quiet to protect informants who would have been killed if exposed, and that the intelligence saved lives. Its attorneys have pointed out that law enforcement used what those informants gathered. Prosecutors say the money moved through accounts opened in fictitious companies' names, and that donors were deceived. Attorney General Todd Blanche, announcing the arrest, said: "I believe she was part of the effort to open bank accounts in completely fictitious companies' names and make payments to individuals for reasons that were not accurate as described." He also called Beirich the SPLC's former chief financial officer, which she never was. The indictment alleges she was romantically involved with one informant who infiltrated the neo-Nazi National Alliance, and that $140,000 of SPLC money sat in a joint account they shared. Her attorney, Michael Proctor, says she is innocent and the case is without merit. "A free and fair society does not use the justice system to silence its political opponents," he said. "Her decades-long record of success dismantling hate groups, and the resulting threats to her life, speak volumes. For this, she has been indicted."
