They tortured him for approximately six hours because he was gay. His death changed the laws of an entire country. Daniel Mauricio Zamudio Vera was 24 years old, living in Santiago, Chile. He had a loving family, a steady job, a wide circle of friends, and dreams for his future. He had studied at Cacique Antupillan High School in San Bernardo. He was gay, and though he had faced verbal bullying for it more than once, he still walked through the streets of Santiago with optimism and confidence. According to his parents, Daniel had previously been assaulted because of his sexual orientation, making the attack that killed him a horrifying escalation rather than an isolated incident. In the early hours of March 3, 2012, Daniel was in San Borja Park in downtown Santiago, an area regularly patrolled by security guards and located close to a police barracks. That night, four men approached him. They had learned he was gay, and that was enough for them to decide what came next. For approximately six hours, they tortured him. They burned him with cigarettes. They beat him with glass bottles. They broke his leg with a heavy stone. Using broken glass, they carved swastikas into his skin. Then they left him alone and unconscious in the park. Despite the park's regular security patrols and its proximity to a police barracks, no one intervened before the attack was over. Daniel was rushed to Posta Central, Santiago's public emergency hospital, with a traumatic brain injury, a broken leg, and deep cuts across his body. He was placed in an induced coma. For a brief period, doctors saw signs of hope. He began to show minor involuntary reactions, and they slowly started reducing his sedation. Then his condition suddenly worsened. On March 19, he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and was placed back into a coma. Doctors confirmed that he had suffered severe, irreversible neurological damage. After 20 days of fighting for his life, Daniel Zamudio died on March 27, 2012, at 7:45 p.m. Prosecutors identified Patricio Ahumada Garay as the leader of the group and said he had links to a neo-Nazi organization. Daniel's death did not remain a private tragedy. Outside the hospital, hundreds of handwritten messages covered the fence as complete strangers left words of encouragement for his family. The Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation (Movilh) immediately announced it would pursue legal action against everyone responsible. Thousands of Chileans gathered for candlelight vigils. On March 30, thousands more filled the streets of Santiago for Daniel's funeral procession before he was laid to rest at the General Cemetery. His death forced Chile into a national conversation about hate crimes that had been avoided for years. An anti-discrimination bill had spent seven years stalled in Congress before Daniel's murder transformed it into a national priority. Then-President Sebastián Piñera personally pushed for the legislation to be fast-tracked. Several churches opposed the proposal, arguing that it could eventually open the door to same-sex marriage. Despite the opposition, the bill passed and was signed into law in July 2012, prohibiting discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender, physical appearance, and disability. BREAKING🚨 ICE is threatening to criminally charge and ARREST an elected sheriff, all because her jail won't hand people to ICE without a warrant. Federal agents hand-delivered letters in early July to Dawanna Witt, the elected sheriff of Hennepin County, Minnesota, and Tom Dart, the elected sheriff of Cook County, Illinois. Both are Democrats. One letter said failure to comply with an ICE subpoena "may constitute Tampering with a Witness … and, if convicted, may result in fines and a term of imprisonment." Witt made it public this week, according to The New York Times's reporting. "In the past few weeks, federal officials have served warnings threatening to arrest me personally for what they describe as witness tampering," she wrote. "There is no legal basis for that claim because our office is following the law." Some of the subpoenas served on Witt demanded people who had already been released from her jail. "It makes no sense for them to have served them in the first place," she said. In Cook County, ICE sent four subpoenas ordering the sheriff to bring detainees to ICE's offices in the Loop. Three of those people were already out of custody, a sheriff's office spokesman said. Hennepin County's policy is roughly a decade old. The jail turns someone over to any agency when a judge signs a warrant. ICE largely doesn't bring judicial warrants. Bradford Colbert, a law professor at Mitchell Hamline School of Law, said of the tampering theory: "It's an offensive reading of the statute. There is no way anyone could possibly read this as tampering with a witness." Homeland Security says subpoenaing local officials is common practice and that "sanctuary politicians refuse to hand over the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens." This is the same crackdown in which immigration agents fatally shot two American citizens in Minneapolis earlier this year. "Threats of prosecution will not cause me to abandon my legal responsibilities or disregard constitutional protections," Witt said. No charges have been filed against either sheriff.
An online stranger offered an 18-year-old girl 9 million dollars to kill someone. She chose her own best friend. In 2019, an 18-year-old girl in Anchorage, Alaska, named Denali Brehmer struck up an online relationship with a man who called himself "Tyler." He told her he was a millionaire from Kansas. He was not. "Tyler" was actually 21-year-old Darin Schilmiller, a man living more than 3,000 miles away in Indiana, who had never met Brehmer in person and had invented the entire persona. Schilmiller made Brehmer an offer. He would pay her 9 million dollars if she sent him photos and video of a killing. He never named a specific target. He simply asked her to make it happen. Brehmer agreed. She recruited four friends to help her: 19-year-old Caleb Leyland, 16-year-old Kayden McIntosh, and two other juveniles. Together, the group decided Cynthia "CeeCee" Hoffman, Brehmer's own close friend, would be the victim. According to prosecutors, Hoffman was not chosen because she had wronged anyone. She was targeted because those involved believed she trusted them completely and would not suspect what they were planning. A 19-year-old young woman with a learning disability, she trusted Brehmer completely. On June 2, 2019, the group invited Hoffman on a hike near Thunderbird Falls, a popular trail area in the Chugiak region northeast of Anchorage. Partway through, they led her off the marked trail toward the Eklutna River. There, they bound her feet with duct tape. McIntosh, prosecutors say, fired the gun. Hoffman was shot in the back of the head and her body was put into the river. Investigators later said the killing was photographed and recorded to satisfy Schilmiller's demand for proof before the promised payment. Afterward, Brehmer and McIntosh drove to a park in Anchorage and burned Hoffman's belongings. To buy themselves time, they sent text messages from Hoffman's own phone to her family, pretending she was still alive and had safely returned to Anchorage. When Hoffman's family reported her missing, they were initially told she had last been seen safe at a different park entirely, information police later learned had been deliberately falsified by Brehmer and McIntosh. Her body was found along the riverbank on June 4, just two days after she was killed. The investigation that followed stretched across two states, involving the Anchorage Police Department's homicide unit, the FBI's Alaska and Indiana field offices, and Indiana State Police, ultimately leading to Schilmiller's extradition from Indiana to face charges in Alaska. As investigators dug deeper into Schilmiller and Brehmer's online relationship, they uncovered a second, separate crime running in parallel with the murder plot. Around the same period, Schilmiller had also directed Brehmer to produce sexually exploitative images and videos of a minor, unrelated to Hoffman, which she sent to him. Both were separately convicted in federal court in 2023 on charges related to the production of child sexual abuse material. In January 2024, Schilmiller was sentenced by Anchorage Superior Court Judge Andrew Peterson to 99 years in prison for his role in orchestrating Hoffman's murder. Describing him as a "worst offender," the judge concluded that Schilmiller had orchestrated the killing largely for the gratification of manipulating and controlling other people. The following month, February 2024, Brehmer received the same sentence, 99 years, also under a "worst offender" finding. The judge acknowledged her youth at the time of the crime but was clear that this was not youthful carelessness. She had known exactly what she was doing. Caleb Leyland, who admitted to providing the car used to carry out the murder and expected a cut of the promised payment, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. The judge found he had played a comparatively minor role and weighed his youth and rehabilitation prospects, sentencing him in August 2024 to 40 years in prison, with 10 years suspended. Kayden McIntosh, the alleged shooter, was tried as an adult despite being only 16 at the time of the killing. In May 2025, he was sentenced to 99 years with 24 years suspended, leaving 75 years to serve, after being convicted of first-degree murder and related charges. Both Schilmiller and Brehmer have since appealed their 99-year sentences. At the center of it all was a young woman who never saw any of it coming, killed by the people she called her friends, over a payment that was never real to begin with. Her father, Timothy Hoffman, became a constant presence throughout the years of hearings that followed, often seen in court wearing a black leather motorcycle jacket, his small support dog Diego at his side. "My daughter trusted these people," he once said. "My daughter just wanted friends." Every year, he organized a memorial motorcycle ride in Cynthia's honor. On June 2, 2024, exactly five years after Cynthia's murder, Timothy took part in that year's memorial ride. His wife, Barbara "Jeanie" Hoffman, rode on the back of his motorcycle for the first time, having previously followed the ride in a separate vehicle. Near mile 49 of the Parks Highway west of Wasilla, Timothy lost control of the motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Jeanie was critically injured but survived. Patrick McKay, one of the lead prosecutors on the case, called Timothy a "zealous advocate" for his daughter and said his death felt almost too unbelievable to be true. He added that he hoped Timothy's family could find comfort in knowing he died doing something he loved, with people he loved, in memory of someone he loved. The following year, the Hoffman family held the memorial ride once again, this time honoring both Cynthia and the father who had spent five years fighting to keep her memory alive.

BREAKING🚨 A New Jersey mother waited all Saturday for her son's daily call from inside an ICE jail. The hospital called instead, and asked her to come identify his body. Edwin Jovanny Lopez Cornejo, 39, called his mother Maria Cornejo from the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark on Friday, July 31, and told her he couldn't feel half his face or his right hand. A doctor was coming, he said. By Saturday afternoon, August 1, he was at University Hospital in Newark with no heartbeat. ICE agents stopped him June 18 as he walked to work from his home in Plainfield. He tried to show them the work permit he had held since 2022 and was told it was no good, his mother said. He spent the next six weeks inside Delaney Hall, run for ICE by the private prison company GEO Group — as Gothamist's Michael Sol Warren and Arya Sundaram first reported. He had diabetes, high blood pressure and epilepsy. He told his mother staff gave him his medication "when they wanted, not when he needed them," that doctors weren't there every day, that he shared a cell with about 10 men and one open toilet, and that he drank water from the bathroom sink. He lost about 30 pounds in six weeks. ICE says facility staff "responded immediately" and called 911, and that Lopez Cornejo "received proper medical care and was seen by medical professionals." The official cause of death is still pending. His family says staff knew he was sick and did not act until after he collapsed. His 12-year-old daughter, a U.S. citizen, was never allowed inside to see him. His request to add her to the visitation list was denied. "I'm going to grow up without a father. They didn't even let him see me one last time before he died," she said at a news conference Tuesday. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman said that if he was denied his medication, Delaney Hall's operators "should be charged with homicide."

The Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego sold to the Department of Homeland Security for $739.2 million on July 2. CoreCivic's own securities filings put that land and those buildings at roughly $160 million. San Diego County's assessor valued it at $168 million. The California City facility in Kern County, worth an estimated $71 million, went for $732.6 million.
CoreCivic still runs both. Its expected take after taxes? About $1.1 BILLION.
On Wednesday it announced ICE had also bought its Prairie Correctional Facility in Minnesota and the Midwest Regional Reception Center in Kansas, and said it is in talks over "additional" sales.
California passed a law in 2024 letting local health officers make surprise inspections of these facilities. San Diego County had to sue in March after supervisors and a health inspector said they were turned away at Otay Mesa. A judge ordered CoreCivic to let them in.
Once the buildings are federal property, state and local inspectors may lose that access entirely, the way federal prisons do.
George Zoley, CEO of the GEO Group, said it out loud on a May earnings call: "As some blue states are considering more active involvement in oversight of facilities, I think the logical solution to much of that is federal ownership of the facilities."
A DHS spokesperson blamed "sanctuary politicians" and said federal ownership means ICE keeps the capacity "to arrest, detain, and remove illegal aliens." The same spokesperson said detention "is a choice."
A 2026 California Justice Department report found detainees with chronic illnesses at Otay Mesa and California City weren't getting adequate medical care, plus hygiene lapses and overcrowding that broke ICE's own standards.
CoreCivic gave $500,000 to Trump's inaugural committee and spent $1.77 million lobbying for the bill that funded these purchases. Trump's disclosures show he bought CoreCivic stock at least six times in 2025.

The firm is Burke Law Group, and until this week its own website described its specialty as advising companies on "complex environmental, regulatory, and enforcement matters." After the award was announced, immigration was quietly added to the practice list. Its other lines of work: white-collar defense, commercial litigation, securities litigation.
The federal notice calls it a "single source cooperative agreement." That means the administration picked the firm with no competitive bidding, and offered no justification for skipping it.
Who runs it matters. Founder Marcella Burke was a Trump appointee at the EPA and the Interior Department. Founding partner Jeffrey Hall now serves as an assistant EPA administrator. Conservative legal scholar Ilya Shapiro is listed as senior counsel. Also on the roster: Justin Shubow, the leading champion of Trump's push to force federal buildings into classical architecture.
The children on the other side of this are as young as toddlers who haven't learned to speak yet, and federal law has required the government to facilitate lawyers for them for decades, precisely because they can be trafficked and abused. Without a real lawyer, deportation is close to automatic.
The network that did this work — nearly 100 legal nonprofits representing more than 20,000 kids, lost its contract last Friday. Burke's doesn't begin until August 15. As Michael Lukens of the Amica Center put it, "technically nobody in the country has a contract with HHS to provide services to kids."

Other detainees at Eloy describe solitary confinement used the same way. An openly gay Russian man, an Afghan with ties to the former U.S.-backed government and an Iranian dissident all said isolation was being used to push detainees into abandoning their claims, and all three said being sent home could mean imprisonment or death. DHS and CoreCivic, which runs Eloy, deny anyone is isolated to pressure them into signing. Voluntary departures hit 89,494 cases as of May 1, compared with 11,977 in the last 16 months of the Biden administration. Monthly totals peaked around 3,000 under Obama and Trump's first term. They now exceed 9,000. Among people in detention, more than 10 times as many cases end in voluntary departure as at the end of Biden's term. In July 2025, ICE ended bond hearings for people who crossed the border illegally, meaning they sit locked up with no chance of release while their case drags. The Laken Riley Act extended mandatory detention to immigrants merely suspected of crimes as minor as shoplifting, even when the charges are later dropped. A federal judge in Oregon, Mustafa Kasubhai, wrote in February that immigration authorities were using the threat of long detention to "win the numbers game at the cost of debasing the rule of law." One man in that case had lived in the United States for 26 years and had legal work authorization. He was arrested on his way home from work and pressured for three weeks to sign papers agreeing to leave for Mexico. He refused, and an attorney got him released on bond. Since Trump returned to office, ICE detention has turned into a conveyor belt of preventable deaths and abuse. Independent analyses of ICE’s own numbers show dozens of people dead in immigration detention in this short period alone, deaths now happening at a rate of roughly one every six days. That “54” isn’t just a number; it’s a symbol of every life lost in a concrete box, every person who begged for help and was ignored until they stopped breathing. Inside these facilities, the horror doesn’t stop at death. Investigations have documented sexual assault and physical abuse against detained people, including children, again and again. Reports now confirm what survivors have been trying to tell us for years: children are testing positive for pregnancy inside ICE detention, the direct result of abuse in facilities run in our name, with our tax dollars. Pregnant kids, survivors of sexual violence, are being moved into states like Texas where abortion is virtually banned, trapping them with forced pregnancy and denying them critical care. Pregnant women and teens report being shackled to beds, denied prenatal care, forced to sleep on the floor, and left to miscarry without proper medical attention. This isn’t “border security.” It’s a system built to break bodies and silence victims. And Congress? Congress knows. Senate investigations have already logged dozens of credible reports of physical and sexual abuse, mistreatment of pregnant women, and mistreatment of children in DHS and ICE custody. Yet the Republican majority continues to fund and expand this machine, more beds, more contracts, more cages, while families die and children are assaulted inside government facilities. Let’s be brutally clear: this will not stop until Democrats take back Congress and move beyond performative outrage to real legislation that shuts this system down. We need a Congress that will end mass immigration detention and replace it with humane, community‑based alternatives, ban the detention of children and pregnant people, create independent oversight with subpoena power to investigate every death, every assault, every pregnancy that begins inside a cage, and cut funding to facilities that violate human rights while terminating contracts with companies profiting off this abuse. If you are tired of seeing photos like this, understand: they don’t go away by themselves. They disappear when we force elected officials to choose between the money that fuels this system and the votes that keep them in power. That means registering, showing up, and voting to give Democrats the numbers they need to shut down ICE’s death‑and‑abuse pipeline once and for all. 54 dead is already too many.
