I felt a profound sense of sorrow as our plane descended into Washington, D.C., last Thursday. I hadn't been to our nation's capital since 2008. As we drove to our hotel, a deep heaviness settled over me. We passed National Guard troops stationed on street corners and around monuments. It was deeply unsettling to see armed American soldiers patrolling the streets of our nation's capital. Passing the Labor Department, I saw two enormous, Stalin-esque banners of Trump and Teddy Roosevelt hanging from the building. I couldn't help but wonder how we had reached a point where the president of the United States was being glorified on government buildings in a way that felt more like a personality cult than a democracy. The next morning, we walked toward Dupont Circle and saw more armed troops, ICE agents, and Secret Service personnel patrolling the streets. When we headed toward the White House, police and military vehicles blocked the usual road. We were directed to a small viewing area where we could barely see the White House through a sixteen-foot fence surrounding Lafayette Park. Americans, Australians, Colombians, and people from around the world were gathered there, straining to catch a glimpse of the people's house through the massive barrier. I was horrified. The White House belongs to the American people. Lafayette Square belongs to the American people. These are symbols of our democracy—not private property to be barricaded and hidden from the public. That evening, we walked to the Lincoln Memorial to watch the sunset. Standing on those historic steps, I looked toward the Washington Monument and thought about Abraham Lincoln and the enormous sacrifices made to preserve this country. From those same steps, Martin Luther King Jr. called upon America to live up to its promise of freedom and equality. Generation after generation of Americans has fought, marched, sacrificed, and died for the ideals represented by these places. And yet, as I stood there, all I could see were federal troops stationed near the fenced-off Reflecting Pool. I couldn't help but ask myself: What happened to the America these monuments represent? The Founders created a government based on the principle that no president is a king, no leader is above the law, and no individual owns this country. That is the America I believe in. That is the America worth fighting for. Those of us who oppose Trump and MAGA cannot stand on the sidelines and hope someone else will save our democracy. Democracy does not defend itself. Free people must defend it. We must organize. We must protest. We must speak out. We must hold our elected officials accountable. We must support those fighting back in the courts and on the ground. And we must vote like our democracy depends on it—because it does. We cannot surrender our country to authoritarianism. We cannot become numb to what is happening before our eyes. We cannot allow fear, exhaustion, or division to silence us. The White House is the people's house. The Constitution belongs to all of us. And the future of American democracy is ours to defend. God help us all.

On Wednesday, the ACLU of Georgia filed a federal claim against ICE and the Department of Homeland Security on his behalf — details first reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Lautaro Grinspan. Taylor, 47, came to this country from Liberia at the age of 2 on a medical visa arranged by Shriners Children's Hospital. He has had 16 operations and has been a double amputee since he was 10. He was cutting hair in Gwinnett County on a valid work permit with a green card in process when ICE took him over a burglary conviction from when he was a teenager, a conviction Georgia pardoned in 2010. He spent 473 days at the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, run by the private prison company CoreCivic. His prosthetic legs run on batteries that need eight hours of charging a day, and he said he could not charge them inside. Without proper liners, he said, "walking was like walking directly on my knees against concrete." He went six days without a shower because the facility had no shower stool. When one finally came, he said the showers were moldy and covered in filth. He said the air conditioning failed in the summer heat and he went days without food because he could not walk to meals. Two weeks to see a nurse. Another two weeks to see a doctor. His wife, Mildred, said he lost significant weight and crawled to the shower. ICE and Stewart representatives have denied his account of the conditions. Taylor was released on May 1.
