Trump is causing a full-blown crisis to distract from his Jeffrey Epstein scandal and it gets so much worse... "This is Liberation Day in DC and we're gonna take our capital back, we're taking it back under the authorities vested in me as the President of the United States, I'm officially invoking section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act," Trump said. "You know what this is? And placing the DC Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control and you'll be meeting the people that will be directly involved with that. Very good people but they're tough." "And, uh, they know what's happening and they've done it before," he added. Trump announced that he will also be deploying 800 National Guard troops to the city to supposedly battle "out of control" crimes rates. Deploying the guard in such a fashion is a flagrant violation of The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 which expressly forbids the U.S. military from conducting “law enforcement” operations within the United States. The only time that Posse Comitatus can be broken by the president is when Congress grants express permission, which it hasn't, or when the Insurrection Act has been invoked, which it hasn't. This is a clear cut violation of the law. Trump ranted that the deployment is necessary to stop "bloodthirsty criminals" and "roving mobs of wild youth." As The New York Times has pointed out, federal officials reported in January that violent crime in the city had dropped to a 30-year low. There is absolute no justification for what Trump is doing, but he's desperate to drive news coverage away from Epstein and his disastrous tariffs. Worse still, Trump announced that his MAGA hatchet woman Attorney General Pam Bondi — the woman at the heart of the Epstein coverup — will be overseeing the takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department. It's worth noting that this is the same police department that was brutally attacked by Trump supporters on January 6th, only for those attackers to later receive pardons from Trump. As if the aforementioned actions won't pointlessly burn through enough of your tax dollars, the administration also intends on reassigning 120 FBI agents to conduct "nighttime patrol duties," turning expert investigators into glorified beat cops. Perhaps worst of all, Trump announced that he has begun to the process of forcefully removing homeless people from encampments. He hasn't explained what he plans to do with these innocent people, but MAGA sees them as less-than-human, much the way that they view immigrants. "And we're getting rid of the slums too. We have slums here. We're getting rid of them," said Trump. "I know it's not politically correct you'll say 'Oh, so terrible.' No, we're getting rid of the slums where they live." This is what the callousness of the Republican Party has wrought. They build an economic system where countless Americans fall through the cracks and wealth accumulates at the very top, and then they demonize, punish, and inflict state violence on the people at the bottom. The more that this administration falters and fails, the more that Trump will embrace authoritarianism to pander to his base and make himself feel strong. Beyond the police department, Trump has broad jurisdiction over the city’s affairs. Numerous federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are headquartered in the city and report directly to the administration.
