I just saw the news that there is a potentially serious public-health situation that is unfolding right now in Siberia. I looked into it and I have some major concerns and questions. One of the main ones, do I trust that Russian authorities are telling the public the full story? I don't want to push any fear or conspiracy, but here's what I could find as fact. A 28-year-old laboratory technician, Daria Shipilova, reportedly died after being hospitalized in Shelekhov, in Russia's Irkutsk region. Multiple Russian and international outlets report that she worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute and may have been exposed to Yersinia pestis due to her breaking a test tube containing the bacteria on September 25th. The hospital where she died has been placed under quarantine, and approximately 197 people who may have had contact with her have been placed under observation. I want to be clear, these numbers are being provided by Russian media and reports indicate that those being monitored have not tested positive or developed symptoms, count me in as skeptical. Russia's chief public-health official, Anna Popova, has reportedly traveled to the region to oversee the response. I feel like I heard the start of this in 2019... Things get more concerning as I read about it. Russian authorities have been reluctant to publicly confirm the diagnosis, referring to a "particularly dangerous infection," while regional officials and multiple media reports have identified the illness as plague. One local government warning telling people not to travel to Shelekhov was reportedly deleted shortly afterward. This looks like a cover up and Russian interference to control narrative. That lack of transparency has led to accusations of a possible cover-up. I just saw the New York Post and other outlets are reporting those allegations, including questions raised by epidemiologists about the official explanation for how the infection occurred. This is 100% pneumonic plague. That's an infection capable of spreading between people through respiratory droplets. Why are these labs still working with this in a way that we could all get infected? And why does it seem like these stories always start around American election cycles? Just making those who see my content aware in case the mainstream news coverage ignores it. You'll be way ahead of everyone if this story gets bigger. Let's keep our fingers crossed it does not.
