Filmmaker Alex Gibney spent years making "Musk," a nearly 4-hour documentary about Elon Musk. Speaking with Kaitlan Collins on October 2, 2026, Gibney described a moment in the film when someone asks Musk what he plans to do with the power he has through Starlink, SpaceX, Tesla and xAI, and why he sought it. Gibney says Musk can't answer. Pressed on what he thinks the real answer is, Gibney said he doesn't think Musk "really knows," that he's accumulated the power without a sense of what it's for, and that he still wants the public to hand him more. Gibney thought he had finished a roughly 2-hour cut in late 2024, after Musk endorsed Trump. As Musk entered the second Trump administration, the film grew to nearly 4 hours. A CGI avatar in the film speaks Musk's actual public words; Musk declined to be interviewed for it. Before the film's out-of-competition world premiere in Venice on September 8, 2026, Musk's attorney Alex Spiro sent Jigsaw Productions a September 3 legal notice over what he alleged was an insinuation about Starlink and the election. Jigsaw responded that the First Amendment protects "fact-based examinations of powerful public figures" and pointed to Musk's description of himself as a "free speech absolutist." The film opens in New York and Los Angeles on October 9, with a nationwide expansion on October 16
