BREAKING: The plague in Russia has claimed another victim, according to reports. The World Health Organization is pressing Russia for answers following the mysterious death of a Siberian plague lab worker and reports of a potential second death. The worker, a 28-year-old laboratory technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia, died on October 2, 2026. Adding to the international anxiety, the WHO is also investigating reports of a potential second infected employee. Dr. Kevin Kavanagh, writing for Infection Control Today, summed the severity of the ongoing situation: “On October 6, Russian media reported a second death in the Irkutsk region. The disease has, thus, spread, and one must assume the outbreak is growing.” While Russian public health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor claims that contacts of the worker have been isolated and no high-threat pathogens were detected, the exact cause of the fatal infection remains officially undisclosed — and fears about Russian information suppression are mounting.. The lack of official clarity has sparked widespread concern, with President Trump calling the situation 'concerning' and indicating plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Kremlin officials, however, have dismissed the reports as largely false and denied that any phone call has been scheduled. Although Russia downplays the risk of an epidemic, global health experts emphasize that timely, transparent information-sharing under international regulations is critical to preventing potential biosecurity disasters and ensuring global health safety. sources: Kavanagh, K. “Suspected Plague Case in Russia: What Infection Preventionists Should Know.” (Oct 7, 2026).
