Jason Watson made headlines around the nation when he stood on the steps of the Capitol building wearing a sign that said "Impeach. Convict. Remove," after speaking to the press about how Trump needs to be impeached over his illegal war against Iran. He was arrested on the steps and taken into pretrial confinement on August 18, where he has remained since then. "Even if he gets an hour to eat or to exercise, he's alone," say Watson’s lawyer, Christopher Mutimer said. "He's looking at having his liberty potentially taken away. ... He is looking at being removed from the military, losing his benefits and potentially spending significant time in jail." His lawyer says that Watson has been in solitary confinement for 24 hours a day. The United Nations’ Mandela Rules, passed in 2015, consider prolonged solitary confinement to be torture. "The severe and often irreparable psychological and physical consequences of solitary confinement and social exclusion are well documented and can range from progressively severe forms of anxiety, stress, and depression to cognitive impairment and suicidal tendencies. "This deliberate infliction of severe mental pain or suffering may well amount to psychological torture," says Nils Melzer, UN Special Rapporteur on torture. The United States’ own military laws state that solitary confinement cannot be used as a form of punishment – which it CLEARLY is being used as here. According to Military Times, “Article 13 of the UCMJ prohibits punishing a service member who is awaiting trial and says confinement may not be ‘any more rigorous than the circumstances require.’” It is beyond obvious that Watson is being subjected to these conditions in retribution for daring to speak out against the Commander-in-Chief. He must be released immediately while the legal process plays out. All he did was PROTEST. But that’s what you get in Trump’s army for speaking out – thrown in the hole for weeks.
