BREAKING🚨 An 18-year-old Florida girl had financial aid lined up for college. Now, she works hotel shifts until midnight while raising her siblings — because ICE took BOTH parents On Aug. 9, Wendy Domingo, a U.S. citizen who had turned 18 the night before, was driving her parents and four younger siblings to buy her little brother sneakers for school. They had just come from church. It was the first time in months the whole family had been in one car together, because her undocumented parents were scared of getting picked up. Border Patrol pulled her over in Palm Beach County. When she asked why, the agent said the license plate was registered to a noncitizen. Her siblings, ages 16, 14, 11 and 3, sobbed in the car as agents detained both parents. In the video, Wendy hugs her dad and asks, "Why did we leave the house? Why didn't you just send me?" The agent told the family he wasn't going to deport the parents, just send them to get papers so they could go before an immigration judge. Abraham Domingo and Maria Leiva, who had lived in the U.S. for roughly 20 years, were sent to separate detention centers. Leiva was deported to Guatemala. Abraham self-deported rather than sit in detention with no end in sight. About a month later, Wendy put her 3-year-old brother, Aiden, on a plane to Guatemala to be with them. "They took us from our parents, and now this is taking us from our brother," her sister Jessica said at the Miami airport. Wendy had financial aid to study to become an ultrasound technician. Now she works hotel shifts, sometimes until midnight, while her younger sister watches the other kids and teaches herself to cook. "The house has gone completely quiet," Wendy said. DHS says "ICE does not separate families." The department also posted that the parents "are responsible for what happens to their children," and pointed to 2024 domestic violence charges against Abraham. Those charges were dropped. "They say that this is supposed to make America great again," Wendy said. "They're just crushing my people's dreams."
