Trump promised us checks three times already. DOGE dividends, $2,000 tariff refunds, $1,000 health deposits. Not one arrived. This week he promised $5,000. "If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000," he said. He called it the Trump Dividend, and said the money would have to be spent inside the United States. Today in Arlington, a reporter asked him directly whether Congress would need to sign off. Trump answered, "Well, we think not. I think they will do it if we needed it. But we think not." He called the payments "a great infusion." He did not explain what legal authority a president would have to hand out cash on his own. Sending checks to Americans requires an act of Congress. There are about 245 million adult U.S. citizens, which puts the cost above $1.2 trillion. No bill exists. Republicans already control both chambers and Trump has not asked them to draft one. JD Vance said the money would come from tariffs. The government has taken in roughly $210 billion from tariffs and other excise taxes this year, about $857 per eligible adult, and more than half of that has already been refunded to companies after the Supreme Court struck down most of the tariffs in February. The national debt passed $40 trillion last month. Speaker Mike Johnson has promised spending cuts after the midterms. Republican Rep. Chip Roy said he'd "like to know how they would plan to pay for … back of envelope … well over $1 trillion." Trump’s DOGE dividend never came. His $2,000 tariff rebate never came. And the $1,000 health savings deposits died in the Republican controlled Senate. But somehow he expects a $5,000 bribe he won’t even pay us will get his party more votes.
