My name is Brian Morris, and I come from the beautiful island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Back in 2006, a friend of mine who was already working in Canada gave me an incredible opportunity by requesting my name for the farm program. Leaving home all those years ago wasn’t a hard decision for me at all; I wanted to come, and I have been here ever since. I spent my first few seasons at another farm before moving here to Moyer farm in 2010. Back home, I used to work on banana farms, do construction labor, and take on painting jobs, but things have slowed down in recent years, so coming here is very important. When I arrive in Canada each spring, our main focus is pruning the orchards. We carefully clear out the dense “bush leaf” to make proper space for the fruit buds to bloom. It is important work because if you leave the trees completely overgrown, the leaves block the sunlight from reaching the apples. By shaping the trees with a small top and a wide bottom, we make sure they get exactly what they need to grow. My favorite variety to grow and eat is definitely the Golden Delicious. The work we do up here is hard because the kind of weather we have here, we don’t have back home. If I was home in St. Vincent, I would never be wearing heavy layers or rubber boots to farm to stay warm. At home, we grow crops called ground provision (grown directly in the earth) like dasheen, eddoes, or tannia (all tropical root vegetables). We don’t have fruit orchards like this at home, so this program has provided a very good career for me. When we aren’t in the fields, my coworkers and I like to relax at home, walk down the street, or enjoy ourselves at the local Legion. Back home, I love to spend my free time watching sports, especially football. As long as I have my health, life, and strength, I plan to keep coming back to try my best and see this work through. When the day comes that I am back home in St. Vincent and no longer able to travel, those long-term contributions will be recognized with a pension so I can support my family and grandchildren.
