One week before she signed the divorce papers, a British tabloid published photos of Bryon Noem, a longtime insurance agent and South Dakota's first-ever first gentleman, wearing fake breasts, along with claims he had exchanged hundreds of messages with adult performers online. Kristi Noem's spokesperson said at the time that she was "devastated," that the "family was blindsided by this," and that they were asking for "privacy and prayers at the time." In July, her 77-year-old mother, Corinne Arnold, told that same tabloid her marriage was finished. "It has been difficult, but we knew this was coming, that they were going to get divorced," Arnold said. The signed paperwork had been sitting there since spring. Trump fired her as Homeland Security secretary on March 5, five weeks before that complaint was signed, after Operation Metro Surge, the immigration crackdown in Minneapolis where federal agents shot and killed two U.S. citizens, Renée Good and Alex Pretti. Noem called both of them domestic terrorists before any investigation was complete. Bystander video contradicted her. Pretti was shot after officers took his legal, holstered firearm. Under oath in front of the Senate days before her firing, she refused to retract the label. Republican senators Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski had both called for her to go. Lawmakers also pressed her on a $220 million taxpayer-funded ad campaign starring herself, which Trump then told reporters he never approved.
