"What's going on in my brain that's making me do this?" Woods spent 29 years at the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, where she was the star DNA expert with a reputation for closing cases faster than anyone. Investigators have now found 1,045 of her cases were tainted. More than 400 were sexual assaults. One murder conviction has already been thrown out. An internal report later found that concerns about her work had been raised more than a decade earlier. She kept testing rape kits anyway… What finally stopped her was an intern. In September 2023, a student on a research project noticed missing information in a case Woods handled back in 2018. She was put on leave within weeks and then resigned. She pleaded guilty in June to perjury, forgery, cybercrime and attempting to influence a public servant. Prosecutors dropped 100 other charges in the deal. Colorado is now retesting evidence in more than a thousand cases, because any result she signed off on may have been faked. In three murder cases already headed to trial, prosecutors cut plea deals for lighter sentences rather than risk putting her DNA work in front of a jury.
