Ana Brnabić was Serbia's first gay prime minister, then speaker of its parliament. On Monday she became president too, the first out gay head of state in the Balkans, in a country where same-sex couples still can't marry. She took over after President Aleksandar Vučić resigned on Sunday, seven months early, to run in next month's parliamentary election. As speaker, the job passed to her automatically, on her 51st birthday. It's temporary: Serbian law gives her three months at most, with a presidential election due by the end of the year. It still makes her the only person in the country's history to hold all three of its top offices. Her record with her own community is complicated. She has said she doesn't want to be branded "Serbia's gay PM," and in 2022 she backed canceling EuroPride in Belgrade, telling activists who chanted "we want Pride" that she was "pushing the boundaries by at least a meter."
