Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles was just defeated by Charlie Hatcher in the GOP primary for the 5th Congressional District. The loss is unusual for a sitting Republican with President Trump’s endorsement. Trump had also appeared at a tele-rally for Ogles before the vote and urged Tennessee Republicans to support him. For LGBTQ people, the result removes from the next Congress a lawmaker whose official account drew national backlash during Pride Month. In June, Ogles’ account posted: “Homosexuality has no place in America. Happy Nuclear Family Month.” Ogles deleted the post after criticism from Republicans and Democrats. He said an unnamed communications staffer wrote it while he was working on his farm, called the message stupid and hurtful, and said the employee had been reprimanded. Looks like they'll all be out of a job soon.
