I’ve been following this incredibly bizarre case out of Harvard Medical School since it first came to light back in 2023, and three years later, there’s been a pretty major development. A 53-million-dollar settlement has now been reached in the civil case tied to former Harvard morgue manager Cedric Lodge and his wife, Denise. If you missed this one the first time around, Cedric was the longtime manager of the morgue at Harvard Medical School. Federal prosecutors said that beginning in 2018, he removed portions of human remains from the school without permission and, with Denise, sold them to people in several states. Investigators said some buyers were even allowed inside the morgue to choose what they wanted. And yes, the Lodges were every bit as memorable as the case itself. The couple owned a pumpkin-orange Subaru with the New Hampshire vanity plate GRIM-R, as in Grim Reaper. They also had a second Subaru with DKSHDWS, a nod to the retro soap opera Dark Shadows. A lot has happened since I first told you guys about this one. Cedric pleaded guilty and was sentenced in December 2025 to eight years in federal prison. Denise was sentenced to 12 months and one day. Several other people connected to the larger network also pleaded guilty. But the criminal cases weren’t the end of it. Families also pursued Harvard in civil court, alleging the university failed to properly safeguard the people entrusted to its medical school. Those lawsuits were initially dismissed, but Massachusetts’ highest court allowed them to move forward last fall. Now, Harvard has agreed to the sizable settlement, which still requires final court approval. As part of the agreement, Harvard Medical School will also formally acknowledge what happened and establish an annual scholarship honoring anatomical donors.
