BREAKING🚨 The United States just deported 161 people to a country so dangerous the plane could not land in its capital. As deportees got off the plane in Haiti, most covered their faces, afraid gangs would recognize them and target them. One of the men stepping off had never even been to Haiti. He was born in the Dominican Republic and told Haitian officials he knew virtually nothing about the country where the United States had just left him. Then some faced another danger: getting wherever they needed to go. Parts of Haiti’s roads are controlled by armed gangs known to randomly fire at passing vehicles. Gangs control an estimated 70% of Port-au-Prince and territory beyond it. That violence is why the deportation plane itself could not land in the capital. U.S. commercial flights are barred from Port-au-Prince, so the plane carrying the deportees landed instead in the northern city of Cap-Haïtien. More than half of Haiti’s nearly 12 million people now need humanitarian assistance. Violence has displaced a record 1.5 million people. This was the first large deportation flight since the Trump administration won its legal fight to end Temporary Protected Status for roughly 350,000 Haitians..
