BREAKING🚨 ICE restrained a Kurdish filmmaker by his wrists, ankles and head and forced a feeding tube through his nose for nearly EIGHT MONTHS after he began a hunger strike in detention. Gabar Choli, 40, is describing the ordeal publicly for the first time. ICE arrested him during a routine immigration check-in in February 2025 after his asylum claim was denied. An immigration judge had nevertheless barred the government from deporting him to Iran, where Choli said his Kurdish activism put him in danger. A month later, Choli stopped eating to protest his detention and demand release or deportation. He told a federal judge he was not suicidal and was using the only form of protest available to him. At the Port Isabel detention center in Texas, Choli says guards repeatedly wrestled him down, shackled his wrists and ankles and pinned his head while medical staff pushed a nasogastric tube through his nose, down his throat and into his stomach. Sometimes, he says, it happened twice a day. A federal judge authorized the force-feeding without first hearing from Choli. When he later asked the court to appoint him a lawyer, the judge denied his request. Court records and Choli’s account describe swollen sinuses, damage to his esophagus and severe stomach problems from the repeated procedures. Choli was not the only one. Government sources told The Guardian that ICE obtained court orders for involuntary treatment of 18 hunger strikers between January 2025 and August 2026. DHS says involuntary treatment is used under legal authority and medical direction when detainees face serious risk of death or permanent harm, or when other compelling interests exist. ICE deported Choli to Canada on January 6. He says he is still living with physical pain and psychological damage from what happened during his detention.
