BREAKING🚨 ICE just ordered $2 million worth of Boston Dynamics robot dogs — despite the company's strict ban on weaponization. The order was posted to a federal contracting forecast on August 27, with the competition field marked NO. ICE wrote that it "has a requirement to purchase Boston Dynamics SPOT Robots and accessories" for "inspection, situational awareness, and hazard assessment." The solicitation goes out September 4. Place of performance: Fort Benning, Georgia. Spot is a 75-pound four-legged machine that starts at around $75,000. It carries cameras for a 360-degree view, has an extendable arm that opens doors on its own, and can pick objects up. A senior DHS official said the robots also carry sensors that detect chemicals, and that ICE would use them where it may be unsafe for an officer to walk into a building. Boston Dynamics said any attempted weaponization of its robots is "strictly prohibited" under its terms of sale and its ethical principles. The company also spearheaded an open letter against weaponizing general-purpose robots, co-signed by five other robotics firms. ICE already bought one from someone else. It spent about $78,000 on a robot from Canadian manufacturer Icor Technology that can deploy smoke bombs. The NYPD dropped its own Boston Dynamics contract in 2021 after public backlash.
