BREAKING🚨 An autopsy has found that Tyrin Johnson, 20, was shot in the back by National Guard troops in Memphis. Authorities had claimed he turned and pointed a gun at them. The bullet entered the right side of Tyrin Johnson's back and exited through his upper right chest, according to an autopsy report his family shared this week. It traveled slightly upward, which a certified forensic pathologist who reviewed the report said is consistent with a man running away from the person shooting him. There was no soot or gunpowder stippling around the wound, meaning he was shot from more than three feet away. Johnson was killed in the early morning hours after the Fourth of July, a few blocks from Beale Street, after Memphis police got a call about shots fired. A Tennessee National Guard report says two guard members got out of their vehicle, approached him, and that he "rounded on them and pointed a tan handgun at them." Both troops fired M17 service handguns. An investigative narrative in the autopsy, based on an account from a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agent, says he "grabbed at his waistband," drew a firearm, and was struck "once in the chest." The autopsy says the bullet went in through his back. Johnson's family has asked authorities to show them surveillance video or any other evidence that he pointed a weapon at anyone. His grandfather, Evaniel Johnson, a former correctional officer with the Davidson County Sheriff's Office, says they still have not been shown video of the moments before the shooting. "Be transparent — you shot him in the back," he said. "I just want to make sure somebody be responsible for what happened. Some accountability. They ain't never going to bring my grandson back." The troops belonged to the Memphis Safe Task Force, created by Trump after he sent troops and federal agents into Democratic-run cities. That task force was involved in four fatal shootings between May and July. The manner of death is listed as homicide. No criminal charges have been filed, and the TBI says its investigation is open and ongoing.
