😞 We received a call today from the South Florida Wildlife Center regarding a Blue Crowned Conure who was dropped off to them after being found by a good Samaritan stuck in a glue trap. 😭 Apparently, they have a neighbor who puts out glue traps for rats and iguanas, which is barbaric to say the least, and unfortunately this probably juvenile Blue Crown who was learning to fly, unfortunately hopped into it and got stuck. He said it was really sad because the other birds in the trees were all making a ton of noise and flying around circling this bird. I guess trying to help it or wondering what was going on. Makes me think this was a fledgling learning to fly, and the parent birds were frantic. What a terribly sad situation. Luckily with some determination and care, they were able to free the bird from the glue trap safely and took it inside and tried to get some of the glue off of his feathers to see if he’d be able to fly. Unfortunately, there was still so much stuff stuck on him that they were sure he would just die if put back outside. They took him to the wildlife center and today the veterinarians checked him out, gave him some fluids, got most of the glue off of him and let him rest. Immediately I put in a call to Enith & Steve who run our satellite facility in Pompano Beach as they are the ones that are always ready to pick up & go at a moments notice to pick up a bird or critter from the wildlife center or anywhere down that way. We are very lucky that we are placement partners with South Florida Wildlife Center, but unfortunately right now they are undergoing major construction and cannot keep the birds overnight so we are always on call for them when a situation like this arises. 🙏 The bird is still down in Pompano and getting wonderful care and seems to be feeling better. He is getting hand fed as he is super super malnourished, he is under a heat lamp to keep him warm and he is getting pain meds, and electrolytes. We will see what his demeanor is like, if and when he fully recovers, which of course we hope he does, but with these situations we never know. Sometimes they can take a drastic turn for the worst and decline very rapidly. This is extremely traumatic for any bird to go through and a wild bird who has never been handled before by people is even more stressed out naturally. We had a pigeon come in a while ago that was completely encased in glue from one of these horrible glue traps, and I had to end up, cutting off most of the bird’s tail and wing feathers and getting off as much glue as I could. I honestly thought the Bird was not going to make it. He was so weak and so tired from the whole experience, but we nursed him back to health and he is an absolutely gorgeous, dark brown Pigeon and now has a girlfriend. 🤎 We are hoping we can do the same for this beautiful bird and we would like to introduce everyone to the beautiful amazing “Elmer
