The Fourth Amendment protects people from unreasonable searches and seizures…. ICE agents don’t get to kidnap someone, from a coffee shop parking lot, without reasonable suspicion or probable cause. The Fifth Amendment guarantees due process…. Holding someone against their will while refusing to tell them why, or denying them access to contact anyone, is a constitutional violation

I read an article written by a psychiatrist who firmly believes that some of the clients he has encountered are suffering from demonic oppression or possession. I, too, believe that sometimes clients suffer from both psychiatric and paranormal issues. Back in the early 1980's, I worked on the adolescent unit of a private psychiatric hospital located in Florida. One of the patients, Lucy, was accurately diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic. Lucy firmly believed that aliens were trying to control her mind and body. Anytime she would see or hear anything to do with extraterrestrials, she'd suffer a psychotic break. One day, Lucy was watching TV in the day room of the unit and a show featuring a space alien came on. She became extremely agitated and had to be transferred to the intensive treatment unit, which basically meant that Lucy was locked in a padded cell. Patients on the intensive treatment unit were closely monitored to insure their safety. During the afternoon shift, Karen, one of the other staff members at the hospital, and I went to check on Lucy. We walked down the carpeted hallway and peered in at Lucy through the small window in the locked door. Lucy was sitting on the floor, slumped over, with her back to the door. There was no way that she could have heard Karen and me approaching, but seconds after we started observing her, her back stiffened and she sat upright. As Karen and I watched, Lucy's head began to turn to the right...and it kept turning until it was facing backwards! Yes, her head did a complete 180º turn! Lucy looked at Karen and me with a possessed, demonic grin on her face. Needless to say, my blood ran cold in my veins! Karen looked at me, eyes wide and mouth agape, and said, "How are we gonna write this up on her chart?!? No one will believe us!" It was this experience - and others since then - that convinced me that sometimes the edges blur when it comes to mental health maladies and the paranormal.
