Donald Trump promised America's 250th anniversary celebration would be "great" and "unbelievable." Instead, taxpayers are now being asked to bail out a fair that hospitalized visitors, malfunctioned constantly, and sold $23 turkey legs. The Trump administration is requesting an additional $10 million from Congress to cover costs from this summer's Freedom 250 celebrations — on top of the $150 million Republicans already allocated last year. This is money for events that were SUPPOSED to be partially funded by private donors, according to the administration's own original promises. And what exactly did that first $150 million buy? The 16-day Great American State Fair descended into chaos. Triple-digit heat forced an early shutdown during Independence Day weekend after at least 11 people were hospitalized and dozens more needed medical attention. Visitors dealt with power outages, a broken Ferris wheel, and eye-watering prices — $20 cheeseburgers, $9 lemonade, $23 turkey legs. Trump bragged on Truth Social that the fair was "packed to the brim" with 45,000 people, directly contradicting eyewitness reports of thin, sparse crowds. Even the state exhibits became embarrassing. States were forced to pay for their OWN booths, and when North Carolina declined, private sponsors stepped in instead — including one who displayed a literal Confederate flag at America's own birthday party. Governor Josh Stein had to publicly condemn it: "This flag does not represent the North Carolina we love." Now the administration wants an extra $10 million, claiming it's needed for security. One might ask what additional security does an event that has been over for weeks need? Senator Jeff Merkley isn't buying the excuse: "It is unacceptable to ask the American people to bail out Freedom 250. Congress already appropriated $150 million — without bipartisan input — with the administration promising that private donors would help finance the rest." Trump wanted a triumphant, self-glorifying spectacle. Instead, he built a broken carnival that hospitalized Americans, embarrassed the country, and is now asking taxpayers to cover the tab for his own mismanagement.
