After marrying in 1958, Richard and Mildred Loving were arrested for violating Virginia's ban on interracial marriage. They were forced to leave their home state, but challenged the law all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1967, they won unanimously, ending bans on interracial marriage across the United States. Richard and Mildred Loving never set out to become civil rights icons. They simply wanted to live together as husband and wife in their home state. Their case, Loving v.
