Every civilization builds gates, and every gate gets a keeper. The priest between you and God. The banker between you and your own labor. The platform between you and everyone you were trying to reach. None of them made the thing passing through. They just stand at the gate and charge you to cross. For a while that works. Then the cost comes due, and every civilization hits the same fork: forgive the debt, or find someone to blame for it. The clean slate, or the sacrifice. The ancients built debt forgiveness right into the calendar so the pressure couldn't build to the breaking point. We threw that out. You can feel the pressure now. It's why our stories keep rehearsing it: the Purge, the Hunger Games, the reset. A society that won't forgive a debt doesn't escape it. It goes looking for a scapegoat. New piece. Maxwell's demon, the lost art of the clean slate, and the choice we're quietly making right now. Link in comments.
