BREAKING🚨🏳️‍🌈 While Trump forces doctors to strip hormones from trans prisoners — Vermont just did something no state has ever done before. Vermont passed H.550 on May 21st. It's the first bill of its kind in U.S. history — and it does something the federal government under Trump is actively refusing to do: protect transgender people behind bars. Here's what's in it. Trans inmates can request transfers to facilities that match their gender identity. Those requests get reviewed by medical and mental health professionals with gender-affirming care experience. Vermont can even transfer prisoners to other states — including Colorado, which just opened dedicated housing units for trans women. Prison staff must now address inmates by their correct gender identity and complete gender-responsive training. And the bill directly tells Vermont corrections to keep following pre-Trump federal trans protections — even as Washington tries to erase them. This wasn't a party-line vote. It passed 27–2 in the Vermont Senate, with most Republican senators voting yes. It now goes to Republican Governor Phil Scott's desk — and he's expected to sign it. Scott has signed pro-trans legislation before, including comprehensive gender-affirming care protections in 2023. Why does this matter so much right now? Because the Trump administration is doing the exact opposite in federal prisons. In February 2026, the Bureau of Prisons issued guidance ordering doctors to taper trans inmates off hormone therapy — care that physicians say is medically necessary and that courts have repeatedly ruled must be provided. A federal injunction is currently blocking that policy as unconstitutional. Doctors warned the tapering could cause cardiovascular damage, bone loss, and severe psychological harm. Trans people are already incarcerated at four times the rate of the general population. They already face disproportionate violence behind bars. And the federal government is making it worse on purpose. Vermont drew a line. One small state looked at a vulnerable population being deliberately targeted — people in cages who cannot fight back — and said: not here. Not to them. Not on our watch.
