A building inspector examining an old 1950s department store elevator shaft noticed the car was stopping several inches higher than it should on the top floor. Above the false ceiling of the elevator was a hidden mechanical room containing a complete, untouched collection of 1940s mechanical window display mannequins and original Christmas decorations. The discovery happened last week in a historic downtown building in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. While performing a safety inspection, the inspector climbed into the elevator shaft and found an extra service level that had been sealed off for decades. The small room was packed with beautifully crafted department store mannequins, holiday window display props, and detailed seasonal decorations last used in the late 1940s. The previous building owners had stored the items there when they modernized the store windows and simply forgot about the space during later renovations. The stable, dark conditions had preserved the fragile materials, fabrics, and paintwork in excellent condition. Local historians and museum curators are now cataloging the collection, which offers a rare look at mid-century retail display culture. The building owners plan to restore and exhibit several pieces as part of the downtown’s historical walking tour.
