We hope all is well with you and yours. Unfortunately, all is not well with democracy in Ontario. Bill 5, which was passed by the Ontario PC Party government last June, is a mad, dictator-like power grab by Premier Doug Ford and his cabinet ministers. Bill 5 is dangerously undemocratic as it gives Ford’s cabinet unconstitutional, king-like powers to change any law without a review or vote of approval by Ontario’s legislature, and also proposes to prohibit anyone from going to court to challenge Ford’s abuses of power. Bill 5 gives Ford unprecedented control over the province, including the power to exempt individuals and corporations from provincial and municipal laws that protect the environment, consumers, communities and workers. Bill 5 allows Premier Ford and his cabinet to designate “special economic zones” in which big businesses would be given the authority to undertake projects without having to comply with provincial and municipal laws. In these lawless zones, Premier Ford or one of his Cabinet ministers could also approve anyone or any business or organization to do anything they want without having to comply with any law.
