An investigative journalist operating under the identity of Martha Root has breached and exposed the user data of WhiteDate, a dating platform catering to white supremacists, along with two affiliated sites. The leak, dubbed “WhiteLeaks,” encompasses over 8,000 user profiles and 100GB of sensitive information, shedding light on the online networks of far-right extremists. Root, described as an “old-school anarchist researcher,” detailed her operation at the 39th Chaos Communications Congress (39C3) in Hamburg, Germany, where she presented alongside investigative journalists. During the live session, Root dramatically deleted the sites, their backups, and associated email accounts, effectively shutting down the platforms. WhiteDate, marketed as a space for “Europids seeking tribal love,” was one of three platforms targeted. The others included WhiteChild, focused on family and ancestry for white supremacists, and WhiteDeal, a networking site for those with racist ideologies. All were operated by a right-wing extremist from Germany through a Paris-based company called Horn & Partners. The breach revealed glaring security flaws in the platforms, which Root mocked as so inadequate they “would make even your grandma’s AOL account blush.” She quipped, “Imagine calling yourselves the ‘master race’ but forgetting to secure your own website – maybe try mastering to host WordPress before world domination.” No sophisticated hacking was needed; Root accessed the data via a simple URL modification—adding “/download-all-users/” to the domain—combined with web scraping, open-source intelligence (OSINT), and assistance from a hacker for exfiltration. The exposed data is highly personal and revealing. It includes usernames, genders, ages, locations, physical attributes like height, eye color, and hair color, as well as income ranges, education levels, marital statuses, religions, and even self-assessed IQ scores. Profile photos contained embedded EXIF metadata with GPS coordinates, device details, and timestamps, potentially pinpointing users’ home addresses. One leaked profile exemplifies the site’s ideology: “Would like to find a woman who understands the value of nation and race, seeks the truth.” The user base was overwhelmingly male, with Root comparing the gender imbalance to making “the Smurf village look like a feminist utopia.” As of now, attempting to access WhiteDate redirects to a Rickroll, a humorous nod to the site’s demise.
