Health Canada Ends Labeling and Safety Reviews for Cloned Animal Meat and Dairy

Health Canada has updated its policy this month to classify meat and dairy from cloned cattle and swine, as well as their offspring, as equivalent to conventional products, removing requirements for pre-market safety assessments and mandatory labeling. The decision followed a review of 2003 novel foods guidelines and 2024 public consultations, with the agency concluding these foods present no unique risks and are compositionally indistinguishable from traditional ones. While experts affirm safety, politicians and advocates express concerns about transparency and consumer choice, contrasting with the U.S.'s unlabeled allowance since 2008 and the EU's outright ban on animal cloning.
