“Tonight, I say this to my Republican colleagues who are defending the indefensible: There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.” ~ Congresswoman Liz Cheney, June 9th, 2022 I’ve been thinking a lot about her words lately. She’s absolutely right. At 79 years old, one day, hopefully soon, whether under his own steam or feet first with a tag on his big toe, Donald Trump will be gone. Hopefully, that day will come before the Lindsey Grahams, the Mike Lees, the Marsha Blackburns and the Ted Cruzes meet their maker. Because I want them all to live long enough to hear Liz Cheney’s words echoing in their heads. And to explain why they’ve voted straight Trumpism as they have ever since. I’m certainly no fan of Liz Cheney’s politics. She’s as right-wing as her father, and her voting record confirms it. But when it came to raw integrity, she was a sequoia amongst the invasive weeds. Consider this: Just since the January 6th Select Committee hearing when she issued that warning, Republicans in the Senate have: ▪️ Approved Kash Patel, a man who said he hates the FBI, in charge of the FBI. ▪️ Approved Robert Kennedy Jr., an ex heroin addict and current conspiracy theorist in charge of overseeing the nation’s health. ▪️ Approved the job of the top law enforcement officer in the land, the Attorney General, to a known Trump toady with a record of corruption. ▪️ Agreed to seat a Fox News weekend host, a drunken lout, one credibly charged with sexual assault and a history of abusing women—per his own mother—as overlord of America’s armed forces. ▪️ They sat in silence as the man they continue to fawn over stood before the United Nations, then just days later before 800 generals and admirals, lied, whined about being unappreciated, boasted about his imaginary achievements, babbled like a drunk in a bar, made a fool of himself and a mockery of America’s place in the world. ▪️ They actually applauded when in flagrant violation of the Posse Comitatus Act, he sent his latter day Gestapo goons into the hearts of America’s cities, rappelling down from helicopters to terrorize otherwise peaceful neighborhoods. I could go on. You all know the rest. The point being, just since Ms. Cheney said those words, the “dishonor” she spoke of has been concentrated tenfold. I’m sure she had many sleepless nights during the time she was at odds with her party over Trump’s crimes. But she probably sleeps like a baby these days knowing she shares ZERO responsibility for what her former colleagues have done since. She put her oath to the Constitution before her political career, knowing full-well it was a suicide mission. The rest, with few exceptions, literally put their political careers before their oaths to the Constitution. Which for now, has served their self-interests. But that glorious day is coming. And I’m looking forward to hearing their reasoning for putting the other 340 million of us in peril. We’re in peril economically, we’re in peril militarily, we’re in peril of being isolated from our former allies, and we’re in peril from the next virus that’s sure to come along. All because Liz Cheney’s former colleagues chose dishonor over honor. They chose themselves over We the People. I’m sure it hurt like hell being rejected by her own constituency as she was. But if there’s any Republican alive today who deserves to have their image on our currency, it’s Liz Cheney. If for no other reason, for her courage and integrity at a time when her former party collectively shirked theirs to stay on the good side of a madman.
