It’s Day 2 of our Small Bird Week, and we want to talk about veterinary care! When a small bird is purchased from a pet store at a low price, their family is unlikely to spend adequate funds on their veterinary care. We’ve heard it time and time again: “I don’t want to spend more on a vet appointment than what the bird was worth.” How can we take an animal into our home, force them to rely on us for every aspect of their care, and then fail to support them when they need it? Many pet store birds come with preexisting conditions from being inappropriately housed in dirty glass boxes, inbred in the breeding facility, and fed fatty seed-based diets. Pet store birds are set up to fail from the start. At Foster Parrots, we believe every one of the animals in our care, from the smallest budgie to the largest cockatoo, deserves medical care. Their “cost” does not determine their value or their worth. We have hundreds of small birds in our care, and every single one is known to us as an individual, monitored for good health, and provided with whatever support they need.
