: Justice is finally served as the ex- Kentucky police officer who fired ten shots during the raid that killed innocent woman Breonna Taylor is sentenced to three years in prison for excessive force. This ruling has racist Republicans howling in rage... The federal judge overseeing the case declined a MAGA Justice Department request that Brett Hankison, the disgraced officer in question, not be given time. The DOJ's outrageous request sparked fresh outrage and was interpreted by many as Trump pandering to his white nationalist base. A large swath of his supporters don't believe that there is such thing as excessive force when police officers are targeting African Americans. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who assisted the Taylor family in winning a $12 million wrongful death settlement from the city of Louisville, called the DOJ's reversal "an insult to the life of Breonna Taylor and a blatant betrayal of the jury’s decision" that "sends the unmistakable message that white officers can violate the civil rights of Black Americans with near-total impunity." While Hankinson didn't hit anyone during the raid, he fired ten times and the bullets penetrated the wall, flying into a neighboring apartment. He was the only cop charged in relation to Taylor's death. Taylor was killed when two other cops returned fire at her boyfriend. Neither was charged in state or federal court. The drug warrant that the police used to enter the apartment didn't result in any drugs or cash being uncovered. U.S. District Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings stated that she was "startled" that there weren't more injuries inflicted during the raid and it "is not appropriate" that Hankinson should escape without prison time.
